MSUM hosted the 2010 Dragon Open on Saturday in Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
The 10-weight class wrestling tournament featured 14 teams from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Canada.
The Dragons had 20 wrestlers competing in two divisions, a red division for upperclassmen and a white for the lowerclassmen.
One year after finishing third in the Dragon Open, junior Corey Ulmer, the top-seeded 125-pound wrestler, went 4-0 in the tournament on his way to capturing the championship.
In the finals, Ulmer came back from a 2-1 deficit against Josh Roberts of Augsburg to tie the match at 2-2 as time expired. He went on to win 3-2 in the extra period, scoring his point with an escape.
With his impressive championship, Ulmer was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wrestler of the week. He outscored his opponents 35-8 as he dominated with two major decisions on the road to the championship.
Ulmer went 2-2 and finished fourth in the 2010-2011 kick-off event, the Bison Open in early November.
The Dragons were successful in many weight classes with four wrestlers in the top three.
Senior Brady Schneeberger, The Super-III Regional champion from last season, defeated Tanner Beaman of the University of Mary twice during the tournament including a 7-1 victory in the third-place championship match.
Heavyweight Jon Swart had to defeat freshman teammate Gerad Fugleberg before he could capture the third-place crown.
After defeating two Augsburg college opponents, Trent Sovde took third place on a medical forfeit.
The Dragons opens the dual season with a matchup against Jamestown College on Friday at 7 p.m. in Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
