Library 103 is almost done with a big makeover, and so are the first floor restrooms.
Classes in renovated room 103 are starting this week. Likewise, the newly styled restrooms will be in use as soon as they pass inspection.
The renovation began late last spring with an aim to create a state of the art classroom. Library 103 is now equipped with facilities a film studies or media class requires.
“Students will see improvements on the lighting, acoustics and overall seating,” said Brittney Goodman, dean of instructional resources. “These changes will make things much more convenient.”
In addition, the first floor of the library now has a reading lounge in its northeast corner. It is a small, secluded area with comfortable seating and two group reading tables. Books in this reading lounge do not need to be checked out. Students can take them and return them whenever they want. Students can also fill the shelves with books they might like to share or donate.
Another new feature is the Diversity Mural on the third floor, created by Faron Blakey. It is a collage that depicts American history, diversity and freedom.
All this is just a beginning.
“There is a $14.8 million capital bonding for the first and second floor of the library,” Goodman said.
Next year from late May, the university will be buckling up for a massive redesign and renovation process that will take up to two years. As to the inconvenience it might cause to the users, Goodman assures “it will be taken care of.”
